Mundo Pacífico activates HyperNET, the first disaggregated optical network in Latin America, using Cassini from Telecom Infra Project

The new coherent optical network, using open transponders, interconnects several cities in Central Chile with non-amplified 200/400Gbps trunks, providing Mundo Pacifico the highest capacity network in the region.

Concepción, Chile, July 20, 2020: In the midst of the most severe pandemic in over a century , Mundo Pacífico announces that it has deployed HyperNET, a software-defined IP network, based on Cassini (the Coherent Switch developed within the Telecom Infra Project). The activation of Hypernet has enabled Mundo Pacífico to significantly increase network capacity to meet current surges in demand across cities in Central Chile.

“Predicting that Coronavirus was going to require confinement of people in their homes, it was evident that we would face an unprecedented increase in traffic. We decided to expand our capacity with Cassini, rather than the traditional Transport, MPLS and IP stack, because it is much simpler to deploy and operate, and requires reduced infrastructure in our sites”, stated Marcos Alcayaga, Mundo Pacifico’s Network Engineering Manager and architect of the project. “The first phase of the network spans from the capital city (Santiago), to the South (Concepción) and the coast (Valparaíso), as part of a long-haul backbone of about 1000 Kms of fiber optics. Next phases will include other regions”, concluded Alcayaga.

HyperNETs is based on Cassini, a disaggregated coherent switch and open packet transponder (designed by Edgecore Networks), which provides high performance switching combined with long-haul CFP2 coherent optics modules (from vendors such as Acacia Comunications), and which runs OcNOS® (a feature-rich operating system for whiteboxes, developed by IP Infusion). By leveraging open automation standards, all services are deployed from a distributed controller. Cassini was developed within the TIP Open Optical Packet Transport Project Group and is currently the industry’s highest capacity open packet transponder, leveraging open automation standards.

Contrary to traditional approaches, the Cassini transponder collapses from the Optical to the IP layers in a single platform, where we have L3 switches making IP routing decisions on the optical layer, a novel concept that is very efficient for managing huge volumes of traffic”, explained José Miguel Guzmán, Country Manager at Whitestack, the company responsible for the end-to-end integration of the technology and also facilitator of the automation platform for real-time provisioning services.

By using CFP2-DCO (Digital Coherent Optics) from Acacia or other compatible vendors, Mundo Pacifico deployed the highest capacity network in the region, interconnecting cities and villages with trunks of 200-400 Gbps (using the highly efficient DP-16QAM modulation), covering significant distances without, in general, any need for external optical amplification.
